My Citizenly Duty

With the election days away, I had finally marked my ballot and sealed it up. Not having left the house yet, I needed both a walk and to deposit the ballot at my neighborhood drop box a few blocks away. I walked there. Passed several neighbors walking their dogs, and was reminded of a rabbi’s teaching about how humans are mammals and need to be walked like other animals.

After dropping off my ballot, I took the bus home.  It climbs a steep hill just before my stop. I was seated at the uphill end of an empty bench, so I took the opportunity to lift my legs and slide towards the rear door, over one empty seat and into the last seat. That was fun.

After I got off, I had an intersection to traverse. Several cars in a row were making left turns in front of me, and I just waved them through. One was a Waymo. I had to wonder, can autonomous cars see and understand when a pedestrian waves them on?
